Mr Jarvis’ Book of the Dead | The Dark Portal

Gravestones at Whitby abbey
In this post we record for posterity and remembrance the names of all those who have fallen to the fatal stroke of Mr Jarvis’ pen. Hero, villain, or neither, we honour their sacrifice for the greater myth of the story.

The deceased of The Dark Portal are as follows:

ALBERT BROWN  (The Dark Portal | Prologue – The Dark Portal | Chapter 1) Beloved husband of Gwen, loving father to Arthur and Audrey. Delivered by Morgan to the altar of Jupiter, Albert now sleeps in the Green. He will be sorely missed.

SPIKER  (The Dark Portal | Chapter 9 – The Dark Portal | Chapter 9) Unjustly accused by Skinner of thieving spoils, in this instance, Audrey’s mousebrass. Victim of an inglorious death, he is gone to the void.

FLETCH  (The Dark Portal | Chapter 8 – The Dark Portal | Chapter 11) Sacrificed by One-Eyed Jake upon the altar of Bauchan.  Born in the House of Mabb, he turned to Jupiter and is thus released from the service of the Lady of Nightmare.

JAKE  [CALLED ‘ONE-EYED’]  (The Dark Portal | Chapter 4 – The Dark Portal | Chapter 11) Executed by Jupiter, this faithful disciple of the Raith Sidhe now serves Bauchan as a shade in the Unlit Regions. He died as he lived – horribly.

FINN  (The Dark Portal | Chapter 9 – The Dark Portal | Chapter 13) Slain accidentally while attempting to murder Oswald. Born in the House of Bauchan, he serves his headless master as a shade.

SKINNER  (The Dark Portal | Chapter 4 – The Dark Portal | Chapter 13) Executed by Jupiter. Born in the House of Hobb, he now serves in his Lord’s dungeons.

SMILER  (The Dark Portal | Chapter 13 – The Dark Portal | Chapter 13) The first victim of the reanimated Black Death. Born in the House of Hobb, he serves along with Skinner in the Pit.

MORGAN [OF CORNWALL]  (The Dark Portal | Chapter 1 – The Dark Portal | Chapter 14) Lieutenant and left claw of the Lord of All, he was unintentionally flung from his master’s altar and drowned during Jupiter’s defeat.

JUPITER  [SELF-TITLED ‘LORD OF ALL’, also referred to as the God of the Rats, the Prince of the Dying, the Lord of the Rotting Darkness, etcetera]  (The Dark Portal | Chapter 1 – The Dark Portal | Chapter 14)  By water deep and the shades of his victims did this Tyrant of Darkness meet his deserved end. We have Audrey Brown and the powers of the Green to thank for that happy outcome.

  1. Niiiice. I see that you consulted the Rat Zodiac as you were whipping these up. Just goes to show that you should never leave home without your copy of the Deptford Mice Almanack! The wisdom contained within its pages might save your life one day!

It’s probably for the best that you couldn’t find a complete list of every rat in Deptford or this page would have ended up being reeeeeally looooong what with the sentient Black Death massacre. Nothing remains in the sewers of Deptford but ghosts…

    • I’d say that would be a wise plan, Matt! I don’t suppose the Almanac is due to receive a new edition anytime soon? Actually now that I come to think of it, was the Almanac ever reprinted along with the books it accompanies?
